The other day at the (movies) Harry Potter & the goblet of fire I saw the trailer for Superman Returns; the new version of the Superman movie. It looks really promising. I am not a huge fan, but it is something that I grew up with. The actor looks quite uncannily like Christopher Reeves and the acting certainly seems to hold more promise than the original.
Another thing that I was pleasantly surprised to see is that they massaged the “S” logo that identifies Superman (as if the cape isn’t enough). But I suppose that every super-hero needs their own brand identity for marketing purposes., otherwise they would not be able to finance all the cool toys that they come up with.
Overall an excellent branding and a fresh take on the Superman story. I am looking forward to it. Coming 2006 !
There have been quite a few favorable reviews of the Star Wars Revenge of the Sith and for the most part I would agree with the reviews. I do have a few gripes, however.
The amount and sophistication of technology that is available in episodes 1-3 seem to be much more plentiful and advanced than what is in episodes 4-6.
I can’t remember exactly who said it, but “The future is old.” Meaning, if some stuff is old now, imagine what it will be like in the future. I know that in the beginning of the movie it says, “A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away…”. But, all of that culture did not just miraculously appear. Some of it should be old… very old. For example, Los Isley (sp) space port in ep4 is falling apart. The Millennium Falcon is always in disrepair. Some of these things make the story more palatable.
Ok, now that I’m done geeking out about ROS, I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The opening scene is better than all of the others, excluding ep5 on Hoth (the ice planet). Overall the movie pulled together several points about Anakin’s character and how he becomes Darth Vader. Check out Kottke’s review for some nice (spoiler) details about the final development of Darth Vader’s character.

I just got back from seeing Alien Vs. Predator. I had read some of the reviews before the movie and I thought I would be a little disappointed. Not true! While I don’t think there are any Oscars coming out of this movie, it did have all the elements that make up a good Alien movie.
Alien Vs. Predator is more like the Alien series than it is like the Predator series. The cinematography was similar to all of the other Alien movies. The acting was similar in both series, so there is nothing to compare. You could see more of the creatures that in any other movie throughout either series.
Some of the reviews that I read talked about how seeing something directly reduces the fear of it. I would disagree. The scenes induced the same amount of anxiety that I remember when watching the Alien(s) movies for the first time many years ago.
Overall I have to say that it is a great movie, and does justice to the two series that precede it (excluding Predator-2 which was crap).
