This has been floating around the internet for about a 4 days now (CNN link), and especially on social sites like Digg (Digg [front page only] search). So the story goes that a student was in their ‟Powell Center“, which I guess is some sort of study hall, and, when confronted by campus police, was unable to provide proper identification; so they tased (sp?) him… German SS anyone? The kid in question can clearly be heard saying that he was willing to leave the property because he knew that he didn’t have proper ID on himself, but the officer tased away for several more minutes. Yes, there are times when an officer has the responsibility to tase a person that will not submit to their authority, but come on… this is a little out of hand guys.
Go check out the articles and video; it’s a little troubling to watch for some people though.
Last week there was this big thing about AOL releasing 650,000 user’s search query data or roughly 20 million queries. Now that is disturbing, but it doesn’t really break any confidentiality laws because they didn’t give away anyone’s identity. But what really gets the goat (so to speak; is user 927’s search data or user 17556639 who is obviously planning to kill his wife) is the search topics of some users. These can be viewed using a nicely parsed html interface available over at Splunked.
Oh, BTW don’t try to view it using Safari or any derivative, Splunked only likes IE and Firefox.
Over at “positivesharing” there is an article titled “Why secret salaries are a baaaaaad idea“. i have worked in several environments where discussing your salary is a terminable offense. I never really understood this mentality. The way most people, myself included, look at this is that if I am formally prohibited from discussing something that is my personal business with anyone that I would want to than there must be something wrong with that topic. I can understand the situation it is some sort of corporate internal or trade secret, but seriously. Unless there is some sort of favoritism, or just generally unfair payment practices in place, I don’t see the reason.
Anyway you look at the secret salry topic, this is a good read; check it out.
Why secret salaries are a baaaaaad idea
Footnote: Don’t ask me what I make; I can’t tell you. LOL
This place that I enjoy going (will remain nameless because of the nature of this article) has open wireless point. Now, it is open intentionally, however, everything is open; the access-point, the router admin… you get it.
Now I am not a black hat, white hat, or even a hat wearer of any-kind, but I brought this to the attention of the person that has legit access to the router’s admin panel some weeks ago and they didn’t do anything about it. So here I sit; having just typed in the default password into the router and I am staring at the admin panel wondering and just thinking about what to do.
Anyway, I changed the SSID to something a little more appropriate for this store. I hope this person locks down the router’s admin panel — for their own good.
Homes Of The Billionaires 2005 – Forbes.com
Found this quite interesting. One of the points that really got me was that they spend a smaller percentage of their income on the housing than the average person.
