WordPress – Highlighting Today

The other day a friend of mine asked me how to have the current date indicated on your WordPress calendar. I realized that I didn’t know and that it was one of the things that I overlooked when I converted over to a WP powered site.

It turns out that it couldn’t be easier. By default WP puts a nice little ID tag in the calendar on the current date. It is declared as id=”today”. From here all you need to do is desccribe how you want it to look in you CSS.

Example:

#today {
	background:#fff;
	color:#000;
}

This will make the table cell of the current date on the calendar have a white background with black text. Use you favorite HEX color conversion utility to find colors that match your site.

Girl Power Triathlon

As I start to gear up for my triathlon season this summer you will see me writing a lot more here, as was the case last year, about triathlon and fitness in general.

I frequently am asked if there are shorted “female only” triathlons. There are several great series that are put on my Danskin and Reebok that I know women who have competed in and highly reccomend these races. I came across this in an email the other day and thought I would post it here.

These races are (from what I hear) great for women that want to just do a triathlon without the competitiveness that sometimes gets infused into the sport.

Reebok Women’s Triathlons

Danskin Women’s Triathlons

GirlPower Triathlon Series Race #1

300m pool swim – 8 mile bike
2 mile run

Aimed at introducing women of all ages to the sport of triathlon, the GirlPower Triathlon is designed to be a non-intimidating, non-competitive fun environment fostering fun, fitness, and friendship. Remember, the GirlPower Triathlon field will cap at 700 participants.

HTML js & the WP-admin page

I was a little disapointed to see that in the WP-admin post page there are HTML creating buttons in every browser except Safari. So I did a little digging and found that aparrenly (according to the PHP source) Safari does not support the javascript necessary to preform some of the functions. I dd not accept this as being gospel and went digging through the source a little more and realized that I was over my head trying to fix the javascript. Instead I just edited the browser snifffing code and enabled the HTML functions for Safari. The only real issue seems to be that the cursor does not get inserted back into the correct place. A minor annoyance IMHO. As long as you add your HTML tags as you type. If you add HTML after you type your post this is a little more than annoying, actually it make the feature almost useless and I can understand why Matt chose to use some browser sniffing to hide it from Safari. (Hello, Dave Hyatt? r u listening?)

With that caveat I give you the edited (ok, only needed to remove one character) PHP file for the admin-functions of WordPress. This should be placed in the wp-admin directory. And as always make a backup of the original file (eg: admin-functions.org.php).

Note: This applies to the current and previous versions of WordPress ( >= 1.5.1).

Courage

I just thought that this was really cool when I stumbled across it.

Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear.

Mark Twain

US humorist, novelist, short story author, & wit (1835 – 1910)
source

It is very similar to one of my other favorite quotes from the movie Dune:

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me.

The CSS Reboot

CSS Reboot – May 1st 2005

Well here it is… For those of you that are keeping count, that would not include me. This would be version 5 of JamesZambon.com. The ongoing changes not withstanding. I am always tinkering with the CSS of this site and without the flexibility that CSS offers me I would never be able to pull this off with out tons of work. Early last year I began using standards to design and with that I began coding this site in XHTML Strict 1.0. This has really made the prediction of how the design will render in various browsers tons easier. Not necessarily easy, but easier.

Well what do you think about the new design?

UPDATE: I forgot to mention my site is in the list at the CSS reboot website. Goto it and vote all of the sites in the contest.
